While it seems like this was staged, it still can happen. If you open and close your garage door opener too many times in a row, the capacitor can overheat and blow. Always better to call a pro when you need a garage door repair.

Weatherstripping is really important to keep critters out of your garage. With time, the weatherstripping or as we call it,”the bottom rubber”, shrinks, gets chewed up by rodents or just wears out. Its important to get it replaced to make sure its well sealed. One of the best ways to check the bottom seal is to close your garage, and see if there is light coming through the bottom. If so, you can purchase weather seal at the home improvement stores, but make sure the rubber matches the retainer that holds the rubber in place. There are different types of retainers and rubber bottoms. You can also schedule an appointment with us and we could do it for you. It really is not an expensive repair and would not take long to do. Call us for a free estimate.

As the temperature drops, many types of grease and lubricants can harden. This may cause your gargae door opener to act up. Cleaning the old grease off the opener rail and off all the gears inside the box where the motor is, and putting fresh grease on all the gears will help your garage door opener run great. It will also make your garage door opener last longer. It may also save you money an costly repairs.Call us for an appointment.

We often get calls about remote controls for garage door openers. There are different remotes or “clickers” as some like to call them. Every brand of garage door opener will have their own remotes. Some will be compatible with different brands. Sometimes the remotes of the same brand, wont be compatible. Huh? Well, the reason for this is that certain brands will change the frequency on which they work, every few years. The changes that are made are for security issues. Rolling code systems is what they use now. Now with the use of a smart phone and a smart phone app, you can control your garage door with your smart phone. Check if its open or closed, or if you are on vacation you can open your garage door from anywhere you can make a call! Pretty cool huh! There are universal remotes that work with a variety of brands, but always check the packaging before you purchase it. You can always call us for info or schedule an appointment with us to deliver a remote for you.

We just had a call from someone who ran their car into the garage door. We asked if anyone had tried to fix or reset the door into the tracks. Unfortunately they did. No one got hurt but they had a pretty bad scare. When a when a garage door gets hit by a car or gets knocked out of alignment, the best thing to do is call a campany to repair or at least close the door safely until the door can get replaced. Garage door cables are under high tension, so never try to move or cut them. Many poeple think that its the best way to close the door. Its not. For the price of a service call most repairs can be made. Leaving the door as is, making sure no one is harms way until a trained pro can repair the door is always the best idea.

If you try to open your garage door and it only opens about a foot, chances are you have abroken garage door spring. DO NOT CONTINUE TO USE THE GARAGE DOOR! Some garage door use one spring. Most use two. In the past when garage doors were not as heavy, doors only need one garage door spring(torsion spring). When a garage door spring breaks, the spring that did’t break is trying to open the door. Most times, it wont. Now the garage door opener is trying to lift the door with the help of only one garage door spring. It may open, but the damage you may be causing the garage door opener may be severe. So if you ever see your garage door come up only a foot or two and come back down, check your garage door springs. Or if you see the garage door opener struggling to lift the door, call us. If you live in our service area, we can come out and repair your garage door. We carry all different sizes of springs on our trucks. We can get you on your way, fast.

One of the common questions we get is, “why is my garage door SO noisy?” “It sounds like my garage door is going to fall off the tracks and land on my car!!!” Maintenence is the word. There may be a combination of issues with your garage door. It may be something simple or it may be something that only a trained pro should take care of. The type of garage door opener you have may also be the reason your garage door sounds the way it does. Belt drive openers should be less noisy than chain drive motors. Screw drive openers can also run relatively quiet, but that depends on regular grease in screw drive. Check hinges for wear. How? Look for black dust under or around hinges. Lubricate garage door springs with silicone lube or WD-40. Check Bearing plates and center support. If you still have doubts, call a garage door service company. For the cost of a service call, they can check your garage door and give you suggestions on how to quiet your garage door and garage door opener.

Cold weather can reallly affect the way your garage door and garage door opener work. Throughout the year, many homeowners lubricate their garage doors and garage door openers with grease. While this will make the door sound better during the warmer months, certain types of grease tend to harden in the colder months. Making the garage door opener work harder to open and close the garage door. It is NOT recommended to to put grease on the door tracks, rollers, hinges and springs. A lighter lubricant like WD-40 would do the trick. Grease on the opener rail is ok, but it is better to use a light weight grease. Garage door springs do need lubrication as well. Silicone based lubricants work great for garage door springs. Following these simple steps will save you money on garage door repair in the winter months.
